As many of you have heard, the US Treasury is going to stop producing pennies. Pennies will continue to be produced until the end of this year (2025). At this time there is no regulation for rounding. It's in Congress as we speak (the Common Cents Act). We're waiting on the rules to come out before we make a change to Cloud Retailer.
We will watch what happens and update this article if there are any changes planned to Cloud Retailer!
In the meantime, if you are worried about running out of pennies, follow this procedure to add manual rounding to the register:
- In back office, go to the Products tab and click "Add New Product"
- Double click the UPC field to generate a new code. Copy that code to your clipboard, name it "Penny Rounding", and fill out any fields that make sense for your data. We recommend labeling it "Non-Inventory":
- Scroll down to "Product Location Data" and set the tax to "No Tax", check the "Prompt for price at register" option, and low bounds to -.04, and high bounds to .04. This will prevent cashiers from abusing the rounding.
- If always rounding down, set high bounds to 0. If always rounding up, set low bounds to 0.

- If always rounding down, set high bounds to 0. If always rounding up, set low bounds to 0.
- Save the product. Now go to the "Admin" tab and find "Task Pads"
- Find an unused button on your default task pad and click it.
- Add "Penny Rounding" to the text, type "Add Line" in the top part of the command, it should auto-complete the "Sales: Add Line Item" command. In the lower part, paste your Penny Rounding product code. Save the task pad.

- Sync and restart the register.
Your cashiers can now manually add rounding so transactions always end with an even 5 cents:
