Overview
Washington state uses a volume based tax for their spirits. In this article we will go over all the peices needed to make sure that the taxes are setup properly for Washington Spirit Taxes.
Setting up Product Sizes
Product sizes must be setup properly in order for Cloud Retailer to be able to calculate and report on the taxes correctly. To do this:
- Click on the products menu and select product sizes.
- If you are creating a new product size, click on Create New Product size, if you are changing one that exists, select the size you want to adjust and click on Edit Selected Product Size.
- In the container size box, enter the volume in milliliters only and click save in the upper right corner.
Setting up Customers
There are two different tax rates depening on if you are a regular customer, or you are an on-premises retailer like restaurants and bars. To setup a customer follow the steps below:
- Click on Admin -> Customers
- If the customer currently isn't in your system, click on Create New Customer, or pick a customer in the list and click on Edit Selected Customer
- Scroll to the bottom of the customer page. There is a switch with the questions "Is Wholesaler?". Turn on that check box if they are an on-premisis customer, of they are not this step can be skipped.
Changing the tax rate
***WARNING*** Changing the tax rate for the Washington Spirits Tax requires the Cloud Retailer program to be restarted AFTER the change has been downloaded to the register (automatically happens in about two minutes).
- Click on Admin -> Sales Tax Jurisdictions
- The following sales tax jurisdictions control the spirit taxes applied on the transaction ***CAUTION*** do not change the description nor the code, this will cause incorrect calculations when selling products assigned to WA Spirit Tax:
- CONSUMER LITER TAX
- CONSUMER SALES TAX
- ON-PREMISE LITER TAX
- ON-PREMISE SALES TAX
- Note that the two LITER TAX jurisdictions are your volume tax and your two SALES TAX jurisdictions are the percentage tax.
- Select the tax that you would like to change and click on Edit Selected Sales Tax Jurisidctions, if the tax change is the percentage tax, only change the SALES TAX jurisdiction that are changing, if it is the liter tax only change the LITER TAX jurisdictions that are changing
- For the below excample, we are changing the COMSUMER LITER TAX as a reminder, do not chnage description or code. Change the fixed amount to the volume per liter amount that the tax is changing to and click on Save.
- Reminder to allow the changes to sync to the register (takes about two minutes) and then restart the Cloud Retailer software.
